We Coolin'
The phrase "We coolin'(?!)" originated very early in EXPANSION. The phrase is commonly used to communicate:
- disbelief ("We coolin'??")
- content, reassurance, and understanding ("We coolin'.")
- excitement ("We coolin'!")
Origins
The present day usage of the phrase is quite disconnected from it's original connotation. the original clip features a woman driving in a car with her "girlies", she turns the camera towards a man who says "Wassup dawg!". It can be inferred through the womans reaction that this man is driving the car, as she says "Don't take your eyes off the road, buddy boy!" to which the man responds: "We good, we good, we coolin'!". The woman then turns to the camera, makes a contorted face of skepticism, and says sarcastically: "We coolin'?!".
The initial use of the phrase stems from its second usage, due to the humor behind how she states it. Over time, it's meaning has distorted to fill a variety of roles in speech, as stated above.
